Four people at a baptismal party, including a 59-year-old grandmother, were wounded early Sunday when someone armed with a shotgun opened fire on a crowd outside a residence here, police said.

None of the victims suffered serious wounds from the pellets, Santa Ana Police Sgt. Dick Faust said.

No arrests have been made, and investigators lack a motive for the drive-by shooting, said Faust, who added that the Santa Ana Police Department’s gang unit has been asked to investigate.

The incident occurred about 1:30 a.m. while revelers stood in the back yard and to the side of the house in the 1100 block of South Lowell Street, three blocks from Mater Dei High School.

Faust said details of the shooting were sketchy but that a vehicle apparently drove slowly by the house and someone with a shotgun blasted away at the crowd.

The four victims--who were struck in the head, face or other parts of their bodies--were treated and released at local hospitals, Faust said.

The wounded were identified as Elvira Oviedo, 59, who lives at the residence; Richard Oviedo, 35, believed to be her son; Richard Cano, 32, of Santa Ana, and Ariel Gonzales, 22, of Anaheim.

Faust said the party-goers were unable to provide a detailed description of the vehicle because it was dark at the time.

On Sunday afternoon, the neighborhood of well-maintained stucco houses was quiet, revealing no signs of the panic that followed the shooting.

An Oviedo family member said his relatives were too distraught to discuss the shooting.

“We’re still trying to get over this whole thing,” he said.
