Services are planned Wednesday for a Santa Ana police officer who died over the weekend after a three-month hospital stay for complications arising after treatment for gallstones, police said. Officer James Broaddus was 43.

Broaddus, a six-year veteran of the force, received several commendations and letters of appreciation from citizens during his time on the force. The former Los Angeles County bus driver was described as a stalwart officer by his colleagues.

“This loss has had a traumatic effect on the employees here,” police spokesman Lt. Robert Helton said. “It was a loss of one of ours, here in our family, and we do consider ourselves a family.”
