Sow/plant/harvest in cold frame where there are freezes.

Sow: Onions, all peas, radishes, winter greens and herbs (except in high desert and mountains), also broccoli, Brussels sprouts (except in high desert, interior climate where fuchsias won’t grow and mountains).

Harvest: Broccoli, carrots, green garlic, onions, shallots, kohlrabi, radishes, turnips, winter greens and herbs (except in low desert), cauliflower, peas (except in high mountains), also Jerusalem artichokes, pumpkins, gourds, winter squashes (except in high desert and mountains), also celeriac, leafy celery, corn, cucumbers, melons, watermelons, peppers, tomatillos, tomatoes (except in deserts and mountains).

COASTAL CLIMATES

Harvest: Assorted beans, beets.

LOW DESERT

Sow: Beets, cardoon, carrots, cauliflower, fennel, kohlrabi, turnips.

Plant: Artichoke, garlic, perennial herbs, leeks, strawberries.

Harvest: Assorted beans.

HIGH DESERT

Harvest: Low Desert plus beets.

INTERIOR CLIMATES

Where fuchsias won’t grow

Harvest: Beets.

Where fuchsias grow fairly well

Harvest: Assorted beans.

KEY

Winter greens and herbs: Arugula, cabbage, chard, chervil, chicories, Chinese cabbages, chives, cilantro, collards, corn salad, cress, dandelion, endive, green-in-the-snow mustard, green onions, shallots, kale, komatsuna (mustard spinach), lettuce, mizuna, parsley, rosette pak choi, sorrel, spinach.
