Prisoners in Greek Prison Halt Riot, Free 6 Hostages
Rioting inmates at a top-security prison late Wednesday released six staff members they were holding hostage and agreed to turn the jail over to authorities, the Greek Justice Ministry said.
The inmates, who went on a rampage of burning and wrecking everything in sight after taking over the Korydallos Prison on the western outskirts of Athens on Tuesday, had made a series of demands ranging from better food to less crowded conditions.
Hundreds of riot police surrounded the building, designed to hold 400 inmates but now housing more than 1,500.
