A 50-year-old San Clemente man died after he was seen speeding down the freeway before crashing into a street sweeper and another car Friday during the evening rush hour, officers said.

Expedito Ruben Inguillo was driving south on Interstate 5 near the Avenida Pico exit about 5:25 p.m. when he crashed into the back of the street sweeper, said Sgt. Roger Fuller of the California Highway Patrol.

“From what I understand, he was traveling at a high rate of speed and didn’t realize the street sweeper was moving quite a bit slower,” Fuller said. “He then attempted to swerve to the right to avoid the street sweeper and ended up clipping it at the right rear with his left front.”

Inguillo’s car then spun out of control and collided with a BMW, Fuller said. The BMW then veered to the right, causing another sedan to hit the curb and drive into the embankment, officers said.

“A witness told an officer that [Inguillo] was driving a little erratically,” Fuller said. Inguillo died at the scene. The driver in the BMW suffered minor injuries.

Three lanes were closed for several hours, causing traffic to back up, Fuller said.
