CLUB REVIEW : Be Prepared to Sweat It Out at Pump

Share

At Pump, a new Sunday night dance club at the recently refurbished El Rey Theatre, hosts Mannie X and Eddy X offer a variety of ways to stay in shape. There’s the dance floor: If you can keep up with the mo’- beats- per- minute- than- you- can- shake- a- bootie- to house and Latin house music Eddy X flips all night, you’re sure to work off any excess calories.

Then there’s the main-stage burlesque show, where drag divas sample innovative workout ideas on actual treadmills and stationary bikes and inside a shower stall. A big-flex highlight is the “neck crane”--the exercise most often employed by the predominantly gay patrons attempting to get a good view of the on-stage antics.

The erotically charged night is enhanced by the double-entendre of its “Pump” motif--not only is exercise aplenty encouraged by the hosts, but many party guys and gals also traipse around in the shoes du jour--wickedly high pumps. This presents an even greater dance-floor challenge. Spinning amped-up mixes of such adrenaline-pumping club hits as Lil’ Mo’ Yin Yang’s “Reach,” Gloria Estefan’s “Abriendo Puertas” and Raw Stylus’ “Believe in Me,” deejay Eddy X challenges the spike-heeled audience to keep up with him. Illuminated by a giant disco ball at the base of the main stage and a trio of decadent chandeliers, the dancers rise to the challenge, but by evening’s end an enterprising foot masseuse could make a killing here.
