2 Teens Jailed in Attack on Deputy
Two teen-agers were jailed without bail Saturday on suspicion of attempted murder and armed robbery in the shooting of a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy during a holdup at a convenience store.
Deputy Mark Bonafede, 27, was in good condition Saturday at Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital in Whittier after surgery. He was shot five times as he chased a youth he saw running out of a 7-Eleven store in Pico Rivera with two 18-packs of beer about 1 a.m. Friday, said Deputy Jim Hellmond.
Police captured the 17-year-old suspected gunman Saturday in Chino after authorities there recognized him as matching an image caught by a surveillance camera at the store, Hellmond said. The boy’s alleged accomplice, a 17-year-old girl, also was arrested Saturday.
