PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : AFC : Senate to Hear Cleveland Mayor

Cleveland Mayor Michael White is to testify today before a Senate subcommittee considering the movement of pro football franchises. White has been leading the charge to block Cleveland Brown owner Art Modell from relocating his team to Baltimore for the 1996 season. “Even though these are national lawmakers, they need to understand the far-and-away unique circumstances in Cleveland,” White said.

Safety Todd Scott, one of the New York Jets’ prime free-agent acquisitions last winter, was released. Scott had lost his job to another free agent, Gary Jones, and holdover Victor Green. The Jets also said that guard Carlton Haselrig remains on a leave of absence for “personal reasons.” Haselrig was fined $132 on in Bayonne (N.J.) Municipal Court for tailgating and driving with an expired license after an incident on Nov. 6. But after he apologized to the court, a disorderly persons charge was dismissed.

Third-string quarterback Jim McMahon asked for and received his release from the Browns. . . . Jacksonville Jaguar Coach Tom Coughlin said defensive end Jeff Lageman, sidelined because of a sprained right foot, will sit out Sunday’s game at Denver. Quarterback Mark Brunell, nursing a torn hamstring, will be evaluated this week but it’s not known if he’ll be able to play. . . . Miami cornerback J.B. Brown will sit out at least one game because of a strained left knee ligament, Coach Don Shula said.
