Former Garden Grove Unified School District Supt. Ed Dundon has been appointed interim superintendent of Tustin’s school district.

Dundon will replace David Andrews, who is leaving the 13,500-student Tustin district Dec. 31 to lead the larger Moreno Valley Unified School District in Riverside County.

Tustin officials expect the selection for the permanent position will take about six months.

Dundon, who was appointed Monday, began teaching math in public high school in 1955 and held the top job at the Garden Grove district from 1973 to 1994.

He has since managed personal investments and helped public schools deal with problems stemming from the Orange County bankruptcy, officials said.

Andrews, who has been Tustin superintendent since 1990, announced his resignation Nov. 16.

During his tenure, Andrews has been credited with improving relations between teachers and administrators, fostering partnerships between the district and local businesses, and sharpening the focus on classroom technology.
