Museums / Galleries

The city of Brea will drape a painting in its gallery (1 Civic Center Circle, [714] 990-7730) and a sculpture in Civic Center Plaza. Gallery hours: noon to 8 p.m. $1.

The Fullerton Museum Center (301 N. Pomona Ave., Fullerton, [714] 738-6545) asks visitors to bring memorabilia of those who have died from AIDS to set before an altar. Admission will be waived in lieu of donations that the museum will forward to local AIDS service groups. Noon to 4 p.m.

The Huntington Beach Art Center will be closed.

The Irvine Fine Arts Center (14321 Yale Ave., Irvine, [714] 724-6880) will display AIDS information and will offer visitors the opportunity to make donations to local AIDS service groups. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission: free.

The Laguna Art Museum (307 Cliff Drive, Laguna Beach, [714] 494-8971) will drape a model of the original museum building and will hang a red ribbon on its exterior rear wall. 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. $4 to $5.

The Muckenthaler Cultural Center (1201 N. Malvern Ave., Fullerton, [714] 738-6595) will darken the lights in its galleries where its “Behind the Orange Curtain” exhibit is on view. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. $1 to $2.

The Newport Harbor Art Museum (850 San Clemente Drive, Newport Beach, [714] 759-1122) will drape “Ruby,” a sculpture by Jonathan Borofsky that sits on the roof. 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. $2 to $4.

The Orange County Center for Contemporary Art will be closed.

The UC Irvine Art Gallery (in the Fine Arts complex, Bridge and Mesa roads, Irvine, [714] 824-6610) will shroud all work in its current graduate and undergraduate exhibits. Noon to 5 p.m. Admission: free.

Observances

Ballet Pacifica in Irvine will distribute red ribbons (a symbol of AIDS awareness) to company dancers, staff and students. The troupe will pause during rehearsal Friday to remember artists who have been lost to AIDS.

The Irvine Barclay Theatre (4242 Campus Drive, Irvine, [714] 854-4607) will display a red ribbon and will leave the exterior of the building dark.

Laguna Playhouse program ads have drawn attention since mid-November to the United Nations’ annual World AIDS Day.

Orange Coast College (2701 Fairview Ave., Costa Mesa, [714] 432-5725) will sponsor a discussion of AIDS prevention, with Raul Magana, an associate professor at UC Irvine’s school of medicine, at 10 a.m. in Fine Arts building room 119. At noon, people will be invited to gather outside the student health center to remember friends and loved ones who have died from or have AIDS. Free.

The Orange County Performing Art Center, the Irvine Barclay Theatre and South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa will use playbill flyers to urge patrons to support a list of local AIDS service organizations.

The Pacific Symphony is donating performance vouchers for use in the AIDS Services Foundation of Orange County’s holiday gift baskets and Christmas stockings. AIDS Services Foundation: 17982 Sky Park Circle, Irvine. (714) 253-1500.

The Philharmonic Society of Orange County is contributing food, toiletries and other essentials to the same AIDS Services Foundation project.

UC Irvine will stage the Orange County premiere of “The Baltimore Waltz,” a play by Paula Vogel, today at 8 p.m. in the Arts Concert Hall in the Fine Arts complex (Bridge and Mesa roads, Irvine, [714] 824-2787). Continues Friday at 8 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. $7 to $9; $1 of each admission goes to AIDS research at UCI.

Museums / Galleries

L.A. County Museum of Art (5905 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, [213] 857-6000). The museum will dim lights on its permanent collection and shroud Robert Longo’s “Black Plent (for A.Z.).” The Writer’s Workshop of AIDS Project Los Angeles will read stories, essays and poems in the galleries at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m.

J. Paul Getty Museum (17985 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu, [310] 458-2003). The museum will drape all works of art in the museum’s Atrium and donate proceeds from the museum’s bookstore to the L.A. AIDS organization Prototypes.

Museum of Contemporary Art (250 S. Grand Ave., Los Angeles, [213] 626-6222). AIDS Project Los Angeles Writers Workshop will read from their works from noon to 2 p.m. The museum will also offer free admission and accept voluntary donations for a local AIDS service organization.

Ken Edwards Center (1527 4th St., Santa Monica, [310] 917-6699). “Imagenes Contra El SIDA (Images Against AIDS),” a show of artist-designed, silk-screen posters organized by the city of Santa Monica Cultural Affairs Division. Reception 5 to 6:30 p.m.; ends Feb. 29.

Long Beach Museum of Art (2300 E. Ocean Blvd., Long Beach, [310] 439-2119). Video screenings on the subject of AIDS. Noon to 9 p.m.

Los Angeles Center for Photographic Studies (6518 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles, [213] 461-8495). The Estate Project for Artists With AIDS presents “TranscEnd AIDS: Exhibition of Work by Artists With HIV/AIDS,” featuring works by local artists. Ends Dec. 17.

Museum of Tolerance (Simon Wiesenthal Center, 9760 W. Pico Blvd., Los Angeles, [310] 553-9036). Eight panels of the Names Project AIDS Memorial Quilt will be displayed. The quilt commemorates the lives of people throughout the world who have died of complications of AIDS.

UCLA/Armand Hammer Museum of Art and Cultural Center (10899 Wilshire Blvd., Westwood, [310] 443-7020). The Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts joins the museum in presenting continuous screenings of the 29-minute video “DiAna’s Hair Ego: AIDS Info Up Front.” Free admission. The museum will also shroud the sculptures in the Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden.

California Center for the Arts Museum (340 N. Escondido Blvd., Escondido, [619] 738-4138). Three bronze sculptures by Mexican artist Adolfo Riestra will be draped in honor of the late artist who died of complications of AIDS in 1989. In addition, the museum will screen videos and provide HIV/AIDS-related literature.

Observances

“A Matter of Taste” Chateau Marmont Hotel (8221 Sunset Blvd., Hollywood, [213] 461-8495). A new performance by movie director John Waters (“Cry-Baby,” “Serial Mom”). The 9 p.m. performance highlights the 7 to 10 p.m. benefit opening of the Gramercy International Art Fair, which continues at the hotel through Sunday. Tickets to the opening and performance are $50 and $100; proceeds go to the Estate Project for Artists With AIDS.

Interfaith Service and Cultural Event St. Augustine’s By-the-Sea Episcopal Church (1227 4th St., Santa Monica, [310] 917-6696). Mitchell Anderson, a co-star of Fox’s TV show “Party of Five,” hosts this event, which is sponsored by the Santa Monica AIDS Project. Includes music, prayers, a candle-lighting ceremony and performances. 6:30 to 8 p.m. Free.

“Party” Henry Fonda Theatre (6126 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles, [213] 480-3232). Five dollars from each ticket sold to Friday’s 2 and 8 p.m. performances of David Dillon’s comedy will be donated to the Shanti Project in honor of the show’s late casting director, Steven Fertig.

“Beneath the Snow Lies a Rose” Westwood Presbyterian Church (10822 Wilshire Blvd., Westwood, [800] 436-4927). Concert by the West Coast Singers. Part I will mourn the tragedy of AIDS, while Part II will feature holiday music in an effort to “look forward in hope” to a world without AIDS. Saturday, 7 p.m. Tickets are $25, $13 and $10.

Media

A record 165 cable networks and operators, including America’s Talking, Bravo, E!, HBO, Lifetime Television, Playboy TV, Showtime and Turner Broadcasting System will unite for “Cable Positive,” an industry-wide effort to air special cable programming devoted to AIDS-related topics on Friday.

Also joining the effort is Los Angeles radio station KLSX-FM (97.1), which is the first corporate sponsor to sign on for the California Department of Health’s statewide HIV/AIDS Prevention and Awareness Media Campaign. The station will air an ongoing series of promotional spots featuring young people with AIDS and the message “Respect Yourself, Protect Yourself.”
