LA PALMA : Family of the Year Is Honored by City : Volunteers : Helping hands

Bruce and Camilla Smith and sons Dane, 15, Alex, 17, and Ketchen, 20, are La Palma’s Family of the Year.

City officials said the Smiths were selected because they “are a shining example . . . of the very fiber of our city.” Officials especially praised the family’s involvement in a number of volunteer and other activities, including youth sports and Scouting.

The City Council presented the family with a commemorative tile and gifts from city businesses.

The Smith family has been active in the American Youth Soccer Organization. Their sons have played, and Bruce Smith served three years as regional commissioner and 10 years as a coach. Camilla Smith was uniform chairwoman and a team mother.

The Smiths’ involvement in Boy Scouts included help with projects to repaint 350 fire hydrants in the city and to restore decorative plants at Walker Junior High.
