Retirees in Romantic Spotlight in Quirky Comedy ‘Frogs’

Share

Quirky, affectionate humor keeps “Frogs” hopping at Theatre West. Mary Jane Roberts’ agreeable new romantic comedy set in a retirement community provides some welcome three-dimensional roles for mature performers and benefits from a lively cast.

Jeanne Bates stars as Dee, a feisty widow whose ongoing battle with frogs in her apartment brings Harry (Dennis Patrick), a crusty, secretive handyman, to the rescue.

Well, sort of. The frog problem is never really resolved, but the real focus is the growing bond between Dee and Harry, leading to a “generic date” at the community dance hall--no questions asked. Naturally, there’s more to Harry than meets the eye, though his real identity is easy enough to figure out early on.

As the piece unfolds, issues of self-determination for the elderly--especially in money matters--are gracefully broached without becoming heavy-handed, courtesy of a long-running feud between Dee and her pushy, acquisitive daughter (Sandy Roveta). Margaret Muse is a hoot in the role of Dee’s busybody neighbor, while Kevin McMahon as an aspiring mime leaves volumes unspoken.

“Frogs” may not leap to the forefront of must-see lists, but Jerry Evans’ cheerful staging renders its tongue-in-cheek look at senior lifestyles with charm and authenticity, warts and all.
