Yacht Found Overturned Off Catalina; No Bodies Recovered

An overturned 60-foot power yacht registered to an owner in Alaska was found Thursday nine miles west of Catalina Island, officials said. A dive team said no bodies were found near the vessel.

The overturned vessel was spotted about 5 p.m. by the crew of a cruise ship, officials said. A county Fire Department dive team searched the waters for several hours.

“They did some swim-arounds, but there were a lot of cables and ropes around the vessel so they had to be very careful,” said Burt Lyon, a county sheriff’s deputy based at Catalina. “We’ll probably tow it in tomorrow morning, get a closer look and send the divers back out to see if they can find any bodies.”

The yacht--the Alaskan Sea Cure--is registered to Jeff Kallis, a resident of Fairbanks, Alaska, officials said. They said Kallis also maintains residences in Juno, Alaska, and San Francisco. The Coast Guard said it had not been able to locate Kallis or determine his recent whereabouts.
