Kara Milling had 16 kills and freshman Chaska Potter had 10 as UCLA defeated Ball State, 15-4, 15-4, 15-7, Saturday night to advance to the third round of the NCAA volleyball tournament.

For the match, UCLA totaled 49 kills, nine blocks and 43 digs and limited Ball State to 32 kills and six blocks.

Bruin Coach Andy Banachowski was impressed by Potter’s play.

“Chaska was steady tonight,” he said. “I’m sure she was nervous before the match, but her hitting was outstanding and she passed well.”

Milling, who also added two service aces, five digs and three blocks, said she played well because “we hadn’t played in a week and I felt fresh for tonight’s match.”

Bruin senior captain Jenny Johnson added a match-high 12 digs.

Ball State Coach Randy Litchfield praised UCLA, but thought his team played poorly.

“UCLA had great balance and great all-around strength tonight,” he said. “We self-destructed and disintegrated in every way we could.”

The Bruins (22-8) will play Ohio State in the Central Regional semifinal Friday at Lincoln, Neb.

In other matches, USC swept Pacific, 15-9, 15-13, 15-5; San Diego State beat Long Beach State, 15-17, 15-13, 15-12, 15-11, and Arizona State defeated UC Santa Barbara, 15-7, 13-15, 15-5, 4-15, 15-9.
