A $5-million lawsuit against the Los Angeles Unified School District by the father of two boys who were injured in a 1993 shooting at Dorsey High School got underway Tuesday.

The lawsuit by Glenn Browne seeks damages for negligence, improper supervision, inadequate safety precautions and infliction of “emotional distress.”

Browne’s sons--Glenn Browne Jr., who was 15 at the time of the shooting, and Deon, who was 14--were waiting to register for classes on the first day of school when Glenn was hit by stray gunfire during a fight between alleged gang members, according to Browne’s attorney, Melanie Lomax.

Glenn had one of his kidneys and large parts of his intestines removed as a result of the gunshot wound, Lomax said. She said Deon was emotionally traumatized by the incident.

Lomax said she plans to call to the stand in Los Angeles Superior Court several school officials, including Supt. Sid Thompson, Dorsey Principal Jerelene Wells and the district’s chief of police, Wesley Mitchell. . . .
