BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Hook Shot Sinks Agoura in Overtime

Doug Francis sank an eight-foot hook shot with 24 seconds remaining in overtime to propel Redondo High past Agoura, 75-74, Tuesday night in a first-round game of the Beverly Hills tournament.

Steve Lyons missed a three-point shot with one second left in overtime that would have given Agoura (1-1) the victory.

Francis, who led the Seahawks (3-2) with 17 points, sent the game into overtime on a layup with seven seconds left in regulation that tied the score, 69-69.

Brian Laibow led the Chargers with 21 points. Joel Weiss added 18 points and 10 assists for Agoura.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

La Canada 73, Valencia 38--La Canada outscored host Valencia, 33-3, in the third quarter of a nonleague game. Todd Crane led the Spartans (4-1) with 20 points and Danny Bush added 18.

Nathan Cline scored 12 to lead Valencia (2-2).

Fillmore 71, L.A. Baptist 64--Jose Becerra scored 10 of his game-high 31 points in overtime to lead the visiting Flashes (3-0) to a nonleague victory. Russ Brumpton led L.A. Baptist (1-1) with 18 points and Aaron Davis added 17.

Valley Alternative 57, Downtown Business 49--Melvin Franklin came off the bench to score 14 points and Shane Hughes added 13 for the Cougars (1-1), who outscored the Suns, 33-18, in the second half to win a Magnet tournament first-round game at Bravo Medical Magnet.

Milken 56, Providence 53--Pioneers’ leading scorer Brian Fay left the game in the second quarter with a sprained wrist, and the team couldn’t recover in a nonleague game at Providence.

Jose Tano scored 15 points and Bobby Chalermsopone had 13 for the Pioneers (2-2). Fay, who is averaging 25 points, scored 10 points and is expected to miss two to three weeks.

Buckley 71, Viewpoint 69--Alex Ong scored 27 points to lead host Buckley (2-2) to a double-overtime nonleague victory. Ryan Okum added 19 points.

Derick Kent scored 28 points to lead Viewpoint.

Kennedy 86, Hamilton 68--Michael Calloway scored 20 points and Clayton Powdrill added 16 points and eight assists as the Golden Cougars (1-1) won a nonleague game at Kennedy.

Saugus 81, Quartz Hill 65--The visiting Centurions pulled away in the fourth quarter of a nonleague game.

Major Shepard scored 25 points and Kyle Jolly added 18 for Saugus (4-1).

Brad Hazard scored 22 points for Quartz Hill (1-3).

Montclair Prep 79, Whitewater 44--Keith Johnson scored 19 points, Anwawn Jones added 17 and Scott Stark 15 for the Mounties in the first round of the Faith Baptist tournament.

All three players joined Montclair Prep on Monday following the Mounties’ loss to Atascadero in the Southern Section Division IX football playoffs last week.

A fourth likely starter, point guard Akil Anderson, will rejoin Montclair Prep next week.

Hoover 71, Burbank 61--The Bulldogs closed the lead to seven points with three minutes left in the third quarter, but the Tornadoes pulled away by making 21 free throws in the fourth quarter in a nonleague game at Burbank.

Eric Jenkins had 26 points for Hoover (3-1) and Arbi Bagheasarian added 16.

Juni Williams scored 23 points for Burbank (1-3).

Calabasas 69, St. Genevieve 48--The Coyotes’ backcourt of juniors Bobby Baumann and Ryan Coleman scored 25 and 17 points, respectively, in the first round of the Faith Baptist tournament.

Coleman also collected nine assists and center Matt Semerau had 10 points and eight rebounds for Calabasas (5-0). Mark Padilla had 14 points for St. Genevieve (0-2).

Oak Park 55, Laguna Blanca 25--Dan Wasserman scored 13 points to lead the Eagles (1-1) in the first round of the Faith Baptist tournament.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Newbury Park 56, Calabasas 47--Melissa Shodin had 18 points and Amy Berman added 14 for the Panthers (1-1) in a nonleague victory at Calabasas.

Jamie Apody had 24 points, six steals and five assists, and Heather Robertson added 15 points and seven rebounds for the Coyotes (3-1).

Bell-Jeff 50, Notre Dame 49--Jaclyn Johnson scored 23 points and had 15 rebounds to lead the visiting Guards (4-0) in a nonleague game. Ashly Ritter and Lourdes Slinsky each scored 14 points for Notre Dame (4-1).

Thousand Oaks 66, Villa Park 29--Jenn Detmer scored 19 points and Nicole Woodruff added 14 as the Lancers (2-0) won in the second round of the University High School tournament at Irvine University High.

The Lancers advanced to Friday’s 8 p.m. semifinal against the winner of the University-Santa Margarita game.

Glendale 48, Hart 43--Narineh Hartoonian had 15 points and five assists for host Glendale (4-2), while Karen Shirikjian added 11 points, eight rebounds and six steals in the nonleague victory.

Jackie Kuptz scored 15 points and Wendy Downen added 12 for Hart (1-2), which made one of two free-throw attempts in the game. Glendale made 17 of 21.

Moorpark 65, Agoura 52--Kelly Jaeger and freshman Damaris Hinojosa each scored 13 points for the Musketeers (4-0) in a nonleague game at Moorpark.

Tracey Milburn added 12 points and eight assists.

Westlake 55, Montclair Prep 33--Megan Carmola scored 28 points to lead host Westlake (1-0) in a nonleague game. Lara Power scored 10 points to pace Montclair Prep (1-2).

Harvard Westlake 46, Brentwood 37--The Wolverines overcame a six-point second quarter, a 20-19 halftime deficit and a six-for-19 free-throw shooting performance to win a nonleague game at Harvard-Westlake.

Carissa Abbott, Omelogo Udeze and and Jenna Trabulus each scored eight points for Harvard-Westlake.

Nordhoff 65, La Reina 41--Nell Becker scored 14 points and made seven assists while Rayven McCloskey added 13 points for the Rangers (4-1) in a nonleague game at La Reina.

Kindrea Cuccia scored 15 points for La Reina (2-2).

Taft 68, Reseda 19--Vanessa Dunn scored 14 points and had eight rebounds to lead Taft in a nonleague game at Taft. Mona Calhoun and Nyoki McKeith added 12 points each for Taft (4-0).

Hamilton 49, Kennedy 39--Akane Maruyama made four three-point baskets in the fourth quarter for the Golden Cougars, but it wasn’t enough in a nonleague game at Hamilton.

The Golden Cougars (3-4) ran into foul trouble and played the final minute with only four players. All of the Yankees’ 12 fourth-quarter points came on free throws.

Maruyama ended the game with 13 points.

La Canada 38, Hoover 27--Kai Felton scored 20 points for the host Spartans (1-0), and Becca Jones added 12 points and 11 rebounds in the nonleague victory.

Rene Alex had 10 points for Hoover (1-4), which was shut out in the third quarter, 10-0.

Fillmore 64, L.A. Baptist 44--Christie Rosenblad had 25 points, 11 steals and eight assists, and Julie Arundell added 18 points and 13 rebounds for the Flashes (3-1) in a nonleague victory at Fillmore.

Deanna Bergeson led the Knights with 23 points.

Quartz Hill 68, Village Christian 62--Rebecca Welch had 20 points and Sanethia Thomas added 15 for the visiting Rebels in the nonleague victory.

Lindy James scored 27 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and had five assists for the Crusaders (2-3), who got into foul trouble in the fourth quarter, and freshman Jenny Greslie added 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Quartz Hill made 11 of 17 free throws in the final period while outscoring Village Christian, 26-15.
