WOMEN’S BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Gomez Assists UCLA to Victory Over Long Beach

UCLA freshman point guard Erica Gomez had a school-record 15 assists to help the Bruins take a 20-point lead at halftime before posting an 89-65 victory over Long Beach State in a nonconference women’s basketball game Wednesday at UCLA.
Gomez tied a single-game school record set by Ann Meyers and Kristi Moore. Kisa Hughes had 23 points and 10 rebounds for UCLA (3-1), which shot 61% from the field in the first half.
Akia Hardy had 20 points for Long Beach (2-2), but the 49ers struggled. Long Beach shot 36% from the field and had 32 turnovers.
In other games:
Southern California College 97, Pacific Christian 23--Jody Caruso had 16 points and four assists for SCC (3-5), which led at halftime, 42-11. The Vanguards forced 39 turnovers and held Pacific Christian to 22% shooting from the field.
Biola 79, Chapman 76--Shawna Parkinson and Monique Sweet each had 13 points for host Chapman, which led at halftime, 49-45. But the Panthers shot 31% from the field in the second half and Biola rallied behind Sonia Schwenk (19 points) and Lynell Johnson (18 points).
