BREA : Mall Given Until 1999 to Finish Renovation

Brea Mall may take three more years to complete an expansion it began in 1987, the City Council decided this week.

The majority of the work for the 537,000-square-foot expansion has been completed, officials said, including addition of Nordstrom and JCPenney department stores, smaller shops and three parking structures.

Under the agreement, approved on a 3-1 vote Tuesday, the mall will have until 1999 to complete the remodeling of the Robinsons-May and Broadway department stores, add a sixth major retailer, additional shops and another parking structure.

Councilwoman Lynn Daucher voted against the agreement, she said, because it extends until 2022 a property tax break for the mall’s owner, Corporate Property Investors. “The financial implications for the city haven’t been addressed,” she said.

Other council members, however, said they supported the extension because the mall is a strong retail base for the city.

“I believe the relationship between the mall and Brea has been a great benefit,” Mayor Burnie Dunlap said.
