UCLA offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden, a 6-foot-8, 310-pound senior, received the Outland Trophy as the nation’s best interior lineman Thursday night.

Ogden beat out Jason Odom of Florida and Orlando Pace of Ohio State, who became the first sophomore to win the Vince Lombardi Award honoring the lineman of the year.

Ogden said he first became aware of the award when he was a sophomore in high school. By the time he was a freshman at UCLA, he was determined to win it.

“I can’t say I was surprised,” he said after he received the award. “I’m just kind of glad it happened.”

Although he has reached the pinnacle as far as college football goes, Ogden feels he will still improve when he is drafted by the NFL.

“When it becomes a full-time job,” he said, “I think I’ll get even better.”

Running back Eddie George of Ohio State won the Maxwell Award as best overall player overquarterbacks Danny Wuerffel of Florida and Tommie Frazier of Nebraska.

Wuerffel received the Davey O’Brien Award as college football’s top quarterback over Frazier and Tennessee’s Peyton Manning.

Ohio State’s Terry Glenn won the Fred Biletnikoff Award as top receiver. Other finalists were USC’s Keyshawn Johnson and Penn State’s Bobby Engram.

Gary Barnett, who guided Northwestern to a 10-1 season and a Rose Bowl berth, was named coach of the year; Northwestern linebacker Pat Fitzgerald took the Chuck Bednarik Award as defensive player of the year; and Greg Myers of Colorado State won the Jim Thorpe Award as top defensive back.

Notre Dame running back Randy Kinder said that an “overindulgence of alcohol” and “immature behavior” led to his suspension from the team.

Notre Dame announced Tuesday that Kinder, the Irish’s leading rusher this season, was suspended from the Orange Bowl against Florida State and from spring practice but refused to say why he was punished.

Kinder said he wanted to dispel speculation and rumor on his suspension. Notre Dame officials said Kinder is expected to return next fall.
