COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Basheer, Oseguera Stand Out Despite 73-59 Loss to UCLA

UC Irvine’s Allah-mi Basheer and Leticia Oseguera each scored 19 points, but it wasn’t enough to defeat UCLA, which came away with a 73-59 victory in nonconference women’s basketball Saturday at UCI.

The Anteaters (4-1) trailed by two with 2 minutes 17 seconds left in the first half, but the Bruins increased their lead to 37-31 at halftime and led by 19 with two minutes left in the game.

Oseguera made seven of eight shots and grabbed nine rebounds. Basheer had six steals and three blocks.

Kisa Hughes scored 18 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and freshman Erica Gomez had 14 points and nine assists for UCLA (4-1).

In another nonconference women’s basketball game:

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 71, Chapman 65--Monique Sweet scored 21 points for the Panthers (3-4), but Chapman shot only 40% (24 for 60) from the field.

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Chapman 84, Claremont Mudd 69--Chapman took a 15-point halftime lead and didn’t let up against visiting Claremont. Pete Sverkos scored 25 points, making seven of 10 three-pointers, and Toby Curto added 16 for Chapman (6-2).
