Calabasas : Jump in Enrollment Boosts School Revenue

Enrollment in the Las Virgenes Unified School District increased this school year, officials said, reversing a recent trend of flat enrollment.

Officials said that the district, anticipating another flat year, had planned steep cuts to make up for lost revenue from the state, which disburses $3,230 per student.

Instead, officials said, enrollment increased by 184 students, to a total of 11,006, bringing in more than $594,000 above last year in state funds. After hiring additional personnel to accommodate the new students, district officials said, the school had $90,000 left over, which will go into the general fund.

In the 1994-95 school year, officials said, the district lost $450,000 in potential revenues because of flat enrollment.

Officials said they have made a concentrated effort over the past year to reverse the trend by recruiting students from outside the district and instituting a program that allows parents who normally teach their children at home to enroll them in an independent-study program.
