TARGET PRACTICE: The Torrance City Council will spend $115,000 on a computer system that will train police officers on how much force to use when making arrests. The Police Department will begin using the firearms training system next year, according to Sgt. Ed La Londe, and all officers in the department will receive firearms training on the equipment.

The firearms system uses lasers to simulate police situations on a computer screen. The program beams an image onto the screen and officers use laser guns to fire at the screen.

“This program is far more realistic than using stationary targets,” La Londe said. “There’s more opportunity for an officer to de-escalate and escalate force in each given situation. . . .”
