Los Angeles City Councilmen Joel Wachs and Richard Alarcon will be on hand this morning to open the new Van Nuys Amtrak station.
The open house dedication of the station at 7600 Van Nuys Blvd. will begin at 9 a.m.
The station, which took nine months to complete, is within walking distance of Van Nuys businesses and shopping centers, said Charles Seifert, public affairs consultant for the California Department of Transportation.
The building includes an Amtrak ticket office, interior and exterior waiting areas, restrooms and parking for Amtrak passengers traveling through the San Fernando Valley on Metrolink and Amtrak’s San Diegan trains.
Amtrak employees will staff the ticket office Friday through Monday to provide ticket sales, trip planning, package express and checked baggage services, Seifert said. On other days, passengers are able to buy tickets from conductors aboard trains.
The facility also includes Metrolink ticket machines as well as loading and unloading zones for Amtrak and Metropolitan Transportation Authority buses. Plans are underway to extend the parking lot south to accommodate Amtrak and Metrolink passengers, Seifert said.
The Van Nuys Amtrak station is a joint project of Caltrans and Amtrak.
