South Bay : Torrance OKs 44-Condominium Project

Signaling a major step in plans to redevelop downtown Torrance, a new condominium project could be ready for occupancy in August after receiving final approval from city officials.

Groundbreaking is planned for March 1996 for the 44 condominiums, slated to be built on the southeast corner of Cravens and El Prado avenues, city officials said.

The project had originally called for 75 units, but the developer decided to build fewer, larger units after prospective buyers complained that the condominiums were too small. The three-bedroom units will range in size from 1,349 to 1,482 square feet. Prices will range from $189,000 to $210,000.

The project, which also calls for street and lighting improvements, new parking areas and landscaping, is part of the final phase of Torrance’s downtown redevelopment. The project also calls for new restaurants, bakeries and shops.
