West Hills : Ground to Be Broken for Surgical Center

West Hills Regional Medical Center will break ground this morning for a planned $5-million outpatient surgery center on the hospital campus.

The 14,026-square-foot West Hills Surgical Center, at 7300 Medical Center Drive, is expected to handle some 5,000 outpatient procedures each year, said Nancy LaSota, a Medical Center spokeswoman. All of the outpatient procedures now done at the main unit will be moved to the new facility, she said.

Moving outpatient procedures to a separate building, she said, will help streamline the process in terms of admissions and scheduling of surgery and take strain off the main unit.

The surgical center will house five multi-specialty operating rooms and two gastroenterology rooms for treatment of stomach, intestine and gall bladder ailments. Procedures will be performed in the following areas: orthopedics; ear, nose and throat; gynecology; ophthalmology; oral surgery; plastic surgery; urology; podiatry and gastroenterology.

City Councilwoman Laura Chick is expected at the groundbreaking, which will begin at 9 a.m. Construction is due to be completed by mid-June.
