San Gabriel Valley : HELPING OUT IN POMONA

Programs such as community policing have helped the city of Pomona achieve a small but steady decrease in crime over the last few years, police said.

“Volunteerism has just exploded,” said Police Chief Chuck Heilman. “People are actually meeting with us and making decisions with us.”

The year-end totals are not yet tabulated, but Pomona has experienced an 11% decrease in violent crimes over the first six months of 1995 compared with the same period last year.

“The public is fed up with crime,” Heilman said. “They have been fantastic in coming forward and working with us.”

Since Pomona launched its community policing program two years ago, the city has seen a decrease in property and violent crime, Heilman said.
