Doug Gilmour reached the 1,000-point plateau by assisting on two goals by Mats Sundin as the Toronto Maple Leafs routed the Edmonton Oilers, 6-1, Saturday night at Toronto.

Gilmour sent a pass to the open Sundin, who backhanded a shot past goaltender Bill Ranford at 17:22 of the third period, for his 1,000th point.

His teammates streamed onto the ice and the capacity crowd of 15,700 gave Gilmour a standing ovation.

He is the third Maple Leaf player with 1,000 points, following Norm Ullman and Glenn Anderson.

Gilmour had 354 points in five seasons with the St. Louis Blues (1984-88), 295 in 3 1/2 seasons with Calgary and 351 in 4 1/2 seasons with Toronto. In 935 games, he has 328 goals and 672 assists.

Mike Gartner, Darby Hendrickson, Randy Wood and Benoit Hogue also scored for the Maple Leafs.

Montreal 1, Pittsburgh 0--Jocelyn Thibault made 29 saves and Martin Rucinsky scored the only goal to give the Canadiens a victory at Montreal.

The Penguins came into the game with an NHL-high 160 goals topped by NHL scoring leader Mario Lemieux. Lemieux’s line was effectively checked and he was held scoreless for the first time in 29 games this season.

Florida 2, New Jersey 1--Scott Mellanby and Jesse Belanger had a goal and an assist each to lead the Panthers at Miami, assuring first-year Coach Doug MacLean a spot behind the bench for next month’s All-Star game.

Florida’s league-leading 25th victory guarantees the Panthers the best record in the Eastern Conference through Dec. 27, making MacLean the first rookie coach for the NHL All-Star game Jan. 20 at the FleetCenter in Boston.

Hartford 3, Philadelphia 3--Eric Lindros scored his 23rd goal and then assisted on Rod Brind’Amour’s tap-in with 12:24 to play to rally the Flyers to the tie at Hartford.

Boston 7, Tampa Bay 5--Cam Neely scored his 16th and 17th goals as the Bruins won at Boston to extend their winning streak to a season-best four games.

Adam Oates had a goal and three assists and Kevin Stevens had a goal and two assists. But it was Shawn McEachern’s goal at 12:25 of the second period that broke a 4-4 tie and sent the Bruins to their seventh victory in nine games.

N.Y. Islanders 3, Washington 1--Travis Green scored twice, including the game-winning goal at Uniondale, N.Y., as the Islanders ended a five-game winless streak.

Green scored the only third-period goal at 9:26 on a power play. His backhander from the low slot gave Tommy Soderstrom his third victory in his last 10 starts.

Winnipeg 2, St. Louis 1--Keith Tkachuk and Teppo Numminen each scored as the Jets won at Winnipeg, ending a three-game losing streak.

The Jets are 11-4-3 at the Winnipeg Arena, which they’ll be leaving for Phoenix next season. Their road record is 4-13-0.

Chicago 2, Dallas 0--Jeff Hackett turned aside 32 shots to register his first career shutout and Tony Amonte and Murray Craven handled the scoring as the Blackhawks won at Dallas.

Hackett withstood a 14-shot second period and stayed undefeated in his last six starts (5-0-1).

Buffalo 4, Ottawa 2--The Sabres won at Ottawa, but lost another goaltender when Andrei Trefilov suffered a knee injury early in the first period.

The Sabres outshot the Senators, 36-17, as Randy Burridge, Pat LaFontaine, Mike Peca and Alexei Zhitnik scored.

But Trefilov played less than five minutes before spraining his right knee. The team is already without goalies Dominik Hasek (abdominal strain) and Robb Stauber (rotator cuff).

That left Steve Shields, the fourth-string goaltender who had never played an NHL game, to carry the load.

Detroit 1, Vancouver 0--Mike Vernon stopped 26 shots for his 11th career shutout and a power-play goal by Sergei Federov, 2:45 into the third period, accounted for the game’s only scoring as the Red Wings won at Vancouver.
