34 Drunk-Driving Suspects Arrested

Thirty-four drunk-driving arrests were made in Ventura County over the holiday weekend, according to statistics released Tuesday by the California Highway Patrol.

One accident involving alcohol resulted in a fatality. Miguel Nunez-Ortega, 18, of Simi Valley died Monday at Los Robles Regional Medical Center of head injuries suffered in a Christmas Eve accident.

According to the CHP’s Dan Rehart, there were 33 fatalities statewide, more than doubling the 16 of last year. Of the 21 deadly accidents handled by the CHP, none of the victims were wearing seat belts.

Holiday drunk-driving arrests also rose to 1,238 statewide from 906 last year, Rehart said.

The CHP’s maximum drunk-driving enforcement period ended at midnight Christmas Day.
