Share

The most comprehensive seismological and sociological report to date on the 6.7-magnitude Northridge earthquake is now available for $20 through the California Department of Conservation.

The one-volume reference work--called Special Publication 116--contains articles written by 49 leading scientists, engineers and policymakers from academia and the state and federal governments.

The report is intended as an information resource for the public, government planners, researchers and consultants interested in earthquake hazards, mitigation and recovery.

State Geologist Jim Davis said the temblor, on a previously unmapped fault, represented “a turning point in earthquake research and new emergency preparedness concerns.”

“We have a scientific obligation to further the economic, social and scientific understanding of this earthquake for the benefit of all Californians,” Davis said.

Specifically, the report addresses the earthquake’s seismological features and its effects on the ground and structures. Other articles detail emergency response and recovery plans, the social and economic impact of the quake and building-code implications for a variety of structure types.

Copies of Special Publication 116 are available by calling the Conservation Department’s publications office at (916) 445-5716.
