A 2-year-old Oxnard boy was in critical condition Saturday evening after his parents found him floating face down in their swimming pool.

Marcos Gonzalez was hospitalized at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, where he is in critical but stable condition in the pediatric intensive care unit.

The boy was discovered in the pool at the home on San Benito Street about 11:20 a.m. Saturday. An Oxnard police officer performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation before paramedics arrived and took the child to St. John’s Regional Medical Center.

“It was a classic drowning,” said Kevin Schroepfer, a captain with the Oxnard Fire Department. “The mother thought the boy was with the father and the father thought the boy was with the mother. All of a sudden, they realized the boy was missing.”

Schroepfer said the pool did not appear to be in use since the water was green and murky. Schroepfer did not know how long the boy had been floating in the pool before his parents discovered him.

The boy was transferred to Santa Barbara’s Cottage Hospital on Saturday evening.
