South Bay : LOOKING TO EXPAND

Share

Los Angeles International Airport has run out of room to grow and officials are looking for ways to expand facilities to handle a possible doubling of passengers in the next 20 years.

Among the options for expansion are reconfiguring terminals and runways, modifying air space regulations or constructing landfill runways in Santa Monica Bay. Airport officials are scheduling three community meetings this month to gather public opinion about expansion plans.

“In order to do a comprehensive master plan, we have to look at both extremes and everything in the middle,” airport spokeswoman Susan Gilmore said. “One extreme is runways in the ocean; the other is to do absolutely nothing and choke this place.”
