Sports Bar Denied Liquor-Only Permit

A Camarillo sports bar owner has been denied a permit to shut down his kitchen and offer only drinks because the bar generates too many calls from neighboring businesses and too many visits from the police, City Council members said.

Kevin O’Connor applied for a change in his license from a food-and-alcohol permit to an alcohol-only permit.

He told the Camarillo City Council that investors want the option of abandoning the kitchen at O’Connor’s Sports Bar & Grill at 369 Arneill Road in favor of a larger lounge area.

O’Connor said the complaints come from only one neighboring business, the owner of Family Fun Cuts hair salon next door. The shopping plaza also has a Vons supermarket and a Thrifty drugstore.

But council members said they had heard too many complaints from residents and nearby businesses to allow more drinking space, and they encouraged O’Connor to make improvements to the building to minimize noise.

“We have received complaints from neighboring businesses for more than a year and the problems have not been resolved,” Councilwoman Charlotte Craven said at Wednesday’s meeting.

“It’s hard to have a family-type operation next door when you’ve got drunks outside throwing up,” she said.
