Soros to Fund Russian Internet Project: Financier George Soros announced plans to fund a new project for developing the Internet in Russia, and also said he would begin investing selectively again after pulling out most of his holdings in 1994. But despite his renewed interest in Russia, Soros also warned that he sees the nation’s investment situation as “extremely precarious” ahead of presidential elections in June. The $1.5-million Internet plan would link hospitals, museums, schools and scientific institutes across Russia to the global computer network. Several Russian computer networks already offer Internet access, but use is limited outside major cities. Soros’ return to the Russian market is seen as a boost for reformers, struggling in the face of a resurgent Communist Party.
