San Fernando Valley : Preschoolers Pay Visit to Firefighters

Share

About 35 toddlers and preschoolers visited Los Angeles County Fire Station No. 73 in Santa Clarita, checking out everything from the engines to the specialized gear of firefighters.

The students were from the College of the Canyons Family Studies and Early Children Education Center, which has been closed for a winter break.

Among the firefighters the children met was Ed Johnson, who dressed up in his full firefighting outfit, including his ax, breathing tank and oxygen mask. To the little ones, he was a scary sight. But he told the children not to be frightened if they ever saw someone dressed like him during a fire. It would mean, he said, that help was on the way.

The children practiced saying “emergency phone number 911” and were assured that if they were too afraid to say anything over the phone, the operator would know their location and where to send help.
