San Gabriel Valley : VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
The Sierra Madre Police Department is looking for volunteer translators who will help officers communicate with the city’s growing number of non-English-speaking residents.
The department is looking for people bilingual in English and any other language, such as Spanish, Tagalog, Vietnamese or sign language for the deaf, to alleviate communication problems officers occasionally face, according to Sgt. Chris Christensen.
For example, Christensen said, sometimes police officers encounter crime suspects who don’t understand the legal process. “At least we want them to understand their rights,” she said.
Volunteers are required to be at least 18 years old, able to pass a police background check and willing to respond on short notice.
