NCL Takes Over Royal Cruise Line

Share

The beginning of the end for San Francisco-based Royal Cruise Line came last week with an announcement from Miami-based Norwegian Cruise Line that it is taking over RCL’s ships and closing the company’s San Francisco and Athens, Greece, offices.

Both companies belong to the financially troubled Norwegian company formerly named Kloster Cruise Ltd., now using the umbrella name Norwegian Cruise Line Ltd.

The Crown Odyssey will become NCL’s Norwegian Crown on March 30, assigned to seven-day Western Caribbean cruises until April 20, when it will reposition to Alaska for the summer.

RCL’s Royal Odyssey (the former Royal Viking Sea) will complete its 102-day world cruise, which began Tuesday from San Francisco, after which the ship will be repositioned to Alaska.

Sister ship Star Odyssey (the former Royal Viking Star) has been sold to Europe’s Fred Olson Line and will be delivered in September after a summer season in Europe.

The 212-passenger Queen Odyssey, virtually identical to the two ships sailing for Seabourn Cruise Line, is said to be up for sale, and the subject of negotiations with an unnamed company.

Passengers and travel agents with cruises booked with Royal should call (800) 227-4534 for more information.
