Food Share, Ventura County’s food bank, received its first truckload of goods Tuesday for its new $243,000 warehouse in Oxnard.

Built with private donations and grants, the new, 8,500-square-foot warehouse is the first phase of a $1.25-million capital campaign to expand the services of the nonprofit organization.

About 120 people attended the grand opening of the new warehouse Tuesday.

Food Share serves more than 127,000 needy people a month through 259 agencies in Ventura County.

With a volunteer base of about 550 people and participation in various government programs, Food Share turns a dollar contribution into $35 worth of food for the hungry, said Jim Mangis, executive director.

On Feb. 24 and 25, Food Share will hold its fifth annual Hike Against Hunger.

Participants, who will sign up sponsors to contribute money based on the number of miles walked, will hike from Ventura to Montecito.

Proceeds will go to purchase a freezer-refrigeration unit for the new warehouse.
