Schools : Education news : Students Help Take a Bite Out of Crime
As is its custom when it needs a new police dog, the Costa Mesa Police Department turned to the community to help raise the necessary $5,000.
Students at Sonora Elementary School in Costa Mesa heeded the call, donating $1,000 to help pay for a successor to Igor, the drug-sniffing dog who was retired in December.
The department has already picked out a replacement: a 3-year-old Belgian Malinois named Bart.
Principal Steve Pavich said the students wanted to use money they raised selling candy and wrapping paper to demonstrate their support for the department’s anti-drug programs. They also hoped it would inspire other schools to contribute.
The student council will present a check to the police at a special ceremony Friday.
