Frank Warren, who spent 13 years as a defensive lineman with the New Orleans Saints before joining the coaching staff last season, has resigned to try to get back on the playing field.

Warren, 36, was told the Saints have no plans to sign him at present.

Coach Jim Mora announced Warren’s resignation Tuesday. Steve Trimble, 37, another defensive assistant, also resigned.

“Frank did a good job for us in his first year of coaching,” Mora said in a statement. “He learned a lot and made a lot of progress during the course of the season. When he is finished playing, I feel that Frank has a bright future in the coaching profession.”

Warren, 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, is third on the Saints’ career list with 189 games and 57 sacks. He sat out the 1990 season after the NFL suspended him when he tested positive for drugs a third time.
