City Atty. Candidate Says He Has $100,000 in Campaign Funds

Three weeks after he began raising money for a 1997 election challenge to Los Angeles City Atty. James K. Hahn, a former key advisor to Mayor Richard Riordan has notified officials that he has collected at least $100,000 for the campaign.

Ted Stein, a former Airport Commission president and unpaid policy advisor to the mayor, filed notice with the Ethics Commission, as required whenever candidates pass certain fund-raising thresholds.

Hahn said he has not been in touch recently with his campaign treasurer about the progress of his fund-raising efforts, which he launched in September.

“The election is still almost a year and a half away, and I’m focusing at this point on doing my job, which I think is the most important thing I can do” in seeking reelection, Hahn said.

Stein declined to disclose the sources of his campaign funds, noting that he is not required to do so until it is time to file campaign finance reports. But he said only $2,000 came from himself or his family.

Nor, he added, has Riordan contributed to his fund-raising efforts to date. “I have not asked him . . . and I have not asked him for his endorsement,” Stein said.
