A Glendale police officer Friday shot and wounded a pipe-wielding man who threatened him after smashing the windows of cars and businesses, police said.

The man, described as “transient in appearance,” had been breaking windows along Verdugo Road near Honolulu Avenue at about 5:15 p.m., Glendale police spokesman Chahe Keuroghelian said. Officers found him at about 5:30 p.m. in Montrose Park, where the man refused to obey their commands to stop and started walking away.

When the officers followed him, the man began yelling and cursing at the officers, then turned and charged, swinging the pipe, Keuroghelian said. One officer fired at the man, hitting him several times, Keuroghelian said.

The man was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital and remained in surgery late Friday. Keuroghelian said the shooting would be investigated under normal department procedure.
