Fans Not Afraid to Be Purists, Say Interleague Play Will Be the Poorest

Share

To Mike Downey and every so-called baseball fan who supports the club owners in their shortsighted attempt to introduce interleague play:

1. For every Yankee-Met game, there will be wonderful matchups like the Boston Red Sox and Florida Marlins at Fenway Park.

2. Thanks to the club owners’ greedy over-expansion and ridiculous three-division format, we don’t see enough of the established rivalries. The Dodgers and Giants used to play 22 times a season; that had shrunk to 13 as of 1995.

3. The novelty of interleague play will wear off as quickly as that of domed stadiums, artificial turf, the designated hitter, watered-down playoffs and every other so-called improvement dreamed up by the owners.

4. When the Dodgers one day play host to the Milwaukee Brewers, Downey and his friends can fight over my seat.

I’m not sure I want to bring children into a world with interleague play.
