Notes about your surroundings Bay Watch--Winter is a great time to explore Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve. Established in 1975, the 752 acres of wetlands are home to a variety of birds, including migrant white pelicans.

Most of the shallow bay is exposed at low tide and consists of intertidal mudflats and an extensive salt marsh community. Stands of cattail and willow hug the shoreline where freshwater runoff enters the bay.

Upper Newport Bay is accessible on the west side at North Star Beach, located on North Star Lane off Polaris Drive. Backbay Drive provides parking, overlooks and access to a small boat launch. A series of activities are also offered to the public:

* Canoe the Back Bay: Meets every Saturday at 8:30 a.m. Canoe rental is $13. Reservations required.

* User-Friendly Kayak Tours: Every Sunday at 10 a.m. Call (800) 585-0747 for reservations.

* Campfire Programs: Enjoy skits, stories, songs and games. Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

* Nature Tours: Explore the Upper Bay wetlands with a naturalist guide.

Join In: Individuals are invited to become members of the California Wildlife Campaign (CWC). The membership focuses on the habitat protection and outdoor education. Members are allowed free access or discount tours at Upper Newport Bay.
