With space running out, city officials said that Wednesday will be the last chance to donate $100 or more to get a name inscribed on the pier’s Donor Wall.

The granite wall, next to the entrance of the pier, was built in 1992 to permanently recognize the many private donors who contributed to pay for the pier rebuilding.

In the storm of 1988, the historic pier was severely damaged. The original pier, built in 1914, was razed in the fall of 1990 to make way for the new $10.9-million pier, which opened in July 1992.

The donor wall holds names of about 2,000 people who contributed $100 or more to the Pier Reconstruction Fund. Donations have been as much as $25,000, said Jim Hanggi, a city spokesman.

“People in the future will be able to see names of people who thought enough of the pier and its historical value to see it rebuilt,” he said.
