ANAHEIM — The Angels signed right-handed starter Shawn Boskie to a minor-league contract Monday and invited him to spring training.
Boskie, who signed a free-agent minor-league contract last year, was 7-7 with a 5.64 earned-run average in 20 starts. He was 6-2 with a 4.81 ERA after 13 starts when he was placed on the disabled list with an inflamed right elbow on July 17. He did not pitch again until Sept. 1.
“Shawn did a lot of good things for 2 1/2 months,” said Tim Mead, Angel assistant general manager. “He was a surprise performer for us. He’s got a lot of potential. We, and he, think he can build on it.”
Boskie will compete with Brian Anderson, Phil Leftwich and Scott Sanderson for the No. 5 starter’s spot in the rotation.
