Update : Follow-up on the news : City OKs Bigger Bill for Emergency System

Although one council member is unhappy over the added expense, the City Council recently approved a $10,692 increase in the city’s share of a new, countywide communications system for law enforcement.

The new 800-megahertz communications systems is scheduled to be under construction this year. Cities and county government will share in the cost.

City Manager Fred Maley told the City Council that the county is now asking cities to pick up a larger share of the tab. Maley said Villa Park’s cost, under the new plan, increases from $45,600 to $56,292.

Nevertheless, Maley recommended that Villa Park approve the extra amount and the council endorsed the action unanimously.

But before voting, Mayor Joseph S. Barsa noted that the communications system increase is about 20%, the same percentage of money the city lost in the county-run investment pool in 1994 following the county’s bankruptcy.
