Sergei Fedorov, in a 16-second burst of brilliance, broke open a tight game in the third period Tuesday night, carrying the Red Wings to a 4-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs at Detroit.

Fedorov’s 21st goal of the season, on a superb individual effort, tied the game, 2-2, and his dazzling pass to Igor Larionov set up Detroit’s go-ahead goal.

The Red Wings have won seven of their last eight and are unbeaten in 19 of their last 21 games. The Maple Leafs are riding a six-game winless streak (0-4-2) during which they have scored only 13 goals.

“I’m not too down,” Toronto Coach Pat Burns said. “We learned we can play with the Wings. That’s encouraging. If you take those two goals and 16 seconds away, we’d have been all right.”

New York Islanders 5, Buffalo Sabres 4 (OT)--Mathieu Schneider scored at 2:19 of overtime as the Islanders gave rookie goaltender Eric Fichaud a victory in his NHL debut at Uniondale, N.Y.

Pat LaFontaine’s second goal of the game tied the score with 4.2 seconds left in regulation. With goalie Dominik Hasek pulled for a sixth attacker, LaFontaine found a loose puck in the lower right circle and backhanded a shot that tucked under the crossbar.
