Students Are Treated to Disneyland Band

Mickey Mouse and the 16-member Disneyland Band were joined by an unusual cast of characters during a concert at Santa Ana High School on Wednesday: four junior high school students from Placentia.

In conjunction with the Philharmonic Society of Orange County, the Disneyland Band travels to schools throughout the county at least six times a year to teach elementary school children about musical instruments and interest them in music.

But Wednesday was the first time that outside musicians were invited to play with the band. The idea was to give promising young musicians a chance to play with a professional band and to provide young role models for the second-graders.

The musicians played two sets Wednesday for about 3,000 students.

Students generally were as interested in seeing Mickey Mouse as they were in learning about music.

But 7-year-old Linda Lomeli of Carver Elementary School said that the presentation did get her interested in playing the piccolo.

“It sounds pretty,” she said of the instrument.
