A Los Angeles police officer and a gang member were wounded Thursday night in a shootout in Boyle Heights, police said.

The officer was shot in the leg and was in good condition at County-USC Medical Center.

The suspect was shot in the torso, but his condition could not be determined.

The identities of the victims were not released.

After the shootout near the Ramona Gardens housing project, relatives of the victim pelted dozens of police units with rocks and bottles, but the officers were able to quickly subdue the crowd, authorities said.

The incident started about 6 p.m. when two members of an LAPD anti-gang unit pulled over a known gang member at Murchison Street and Lancaster Avenue, police said.

“The officers got out of their vehicle and started to question him but he pulled out a gun and started firing,” Cmdr. Tim McBride said.

“They answered with their own guns, and the area was filled with bullet casings.”
