At least 20 gang members were involved in a melee at a motel on Johnson Drive in Ventura early Saturday, and it took 14 police officers to break up the brawl, authorities said.

According to police, the disturbance began at 1:15 a.m. after rival gangs rented rooms in the Motel 6 to hold parties.

By the time the police arrived, at least 20 gang members were fighting with each other, authorities said.

When police tried to stop the melee, they were initially thwarted by beer bottles thrown at them by the crowd.

John Campos, 24, of Ventura was the only person arrested during the disturbance, police said.

He was arrested on suspicion of interfering with officers trying to halt the fight.

Employees at Motel 6 declined to comment on the incident Saturday.
